It might be surprising to learn that it’s actually relatively normal to not remember dreams. This is because during REM sleep, when dreams occur, our brains are in a different state than when we are awake and trying to remember something. Dreams are also more likely to be forgotten if they are not particularly vivid or if we wake up during them. There are a few theories as to why we forget our dreams, but the most popular one is that the part of our brain that controls long-term memory is simply not active during REM sleep.

There is no one answer to this question as everyone experiences dreams differently. Some people may never remember their dreams while others may remember them vividly. There is no evidence to suggest that forgetting dreams is bad for a person, but some people may find it disappointing if they are unable to recall their dreams.

What does it mean if you never remember your dreams?

It is interesting to note that dreams tend to occur during the rapid eye movement (REM) cycle of sleep. A 2019 study noted that our ability to make memories is impaired during REM sleep. That would help explain why we’re prone to forgetting dreams. Missing out on REM sleep could mean missing out on dreams, too.

REM sleep is a state of sleep that is associated with vivid dreams. However, if less REM sleep is occurring, the dreams may not be recalled. This is because REM sleep is a state of sleep that is transitionary, and if the person wakes up before REM sleep is complete, the dreams may be forgotten.
