A dream is a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not well understood, although they have been a topic of scientific speculation, philosophical and religious interest throughout recorded history. The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology.

During a typical lifespan, people usually have 140,000 to 1,000,000 dreams, which equals about four dreams per night. Dreams mainly occur in the rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep—when brain activity is most similar to that during wakefulness. REM sleep is revealed by continuous movements of the eyes during sleep. At any given point in time, normal humans spend about 25% of their total sleep time in REM sleep.

People usually report more vivid and recall more details of dream content from REM sleep than from non-REM sleep. Nevertheless, dreaming does occur during non-REM sleep. Dreams during non-REM sleep are less vivid and more likely to be forgotten. Brain activity during REM sleep is quite similar to brain activity during wakefulness.

There is no one answer to this question as dreams can be interpreted in many ways. Generally speaking, however, it is believed that the people who appear in our dreams are symbols or representations of aspects of our own selves. Therefore, appearing in someone’s dream could be interpreted as that person’s unconscious mind trying to communicate something to them about themselves. It could also be a way for the dreaming individual to process and make sense of their own thoughts and experiences.
