Thomas, the former Major League Baseball star and new owner of the Field of Dreams, said Wednesday that MLB will not return to the movie site for a game in 2023 as had been previously announced.
The reason, Thomas said, is that the Field of Dreams is scheduled to undergo a $140 million construction project that will add a 24,000-seat stadium, a hotel and a conference center to the property.
“We’re not going to be able to do the game in 2023 because of the construction,” Thomas said. “It’s just not going to work out.”
The news is a disappointment for baseball fans who had hoped to see MLB return to the Field of Dreams for the first time since the movie was released in 1989.
But Thomas said the construction project, which is set to begin next year, is necessary to make the Field of Dreams a “world-class destination.”
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something really special,” he said.
